One More Post About "It Can't Happen Here"
It turns out that novel about a fascist dictatorship setting up shop in the US It Can’t Happen Here (which is amazing) was adapted for television in the eighties. NBC thought the original script was too smart for American audiences, so they had it re-written to feature man-eating aliens. They named the adaptation V. As in, the series that they recently tried to resurrect. Crazy, huh? ...

I draw you close to me, you women, I cannot let you go, I would do you good, I am for you, and you are for me, not only for our own sake, but for others' sakes, Envelop'd in you sleep greater heroes and bards, They refuse to awake at the touch of any man but me.

Mike D gets respect, opportunity to vote on AT&T's...
shortformblog: They didn’t say anything about cash or jewelry, but the SEC did side with three AT&T investors — including the Beastie Boys’ Michael “Mike D” Diamond — who believed that shareholders should have a vote in the company’s net neutrality policy, because it has become part of the national debate. AT&T argued that the vote would “directly interfere with its network management...

So I met the Carolina Hurricanes today you guys
betsybliss: and I sat beside Jeff Skinner, and outside I was all.  but Inside:  I love the Hurricanes, but sometimes I feel that I’m missing the raw enthusiasm girls feel for the 19 year old Skinner (who is amazingly talented for his age, to wit). But seriously, the fan girl worship for Skinner is unnerving.

A Little Noir
I’m listening to the blues, drinking a merlot that’s well on its way to vinegar. And yet, her sharp eyes and long legs won’t let me catch a wink of sleep. Her challenge keeps me awake. That challenge that she implicitly forwards. Somewhere out there, she has the answers I want. She could relent, and let me have everything I need to know. But she’s better than that. Instead,...

fuck the super bowl
motoroboto: I just had a super bowl of philosophical debates. It was really good. I enjoyed it. Also, the super bowl was great too. If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple.  But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas. It Can't Happen Here
I’ve just started reading It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis. So far, I adore this book. The book was written in 1936, and it follows the rise of a fascist dictatorship in the US. Fun stuff. So far, he doesn’t handle the topic with a maudlin tone. He’s more snorting in sarcastic indignation, saying, “Oh, yeah. Germany and Italy are totally cool, we should be like...
